Saving Tips #1: Increase fuel efficiency and save petrol
We all are in CNY mood and many of us are going back to our home town either to celebrate the CNY or spend our time with family members. Or maybe you are going for vacation out of the city.Since public transport is not the best option yet in our country, we still have to drive our own car whenever we go especially during this festive season. Here are some tips that you can implement immediately at no cost on how to increase car’s fuel efficiency and make saving from that.
Keep your tired inflated
Tyres lose air due to time and temperature, about 1 psi per month or more depending on road condition and the way you driving. Every 2 psi drop in your tyres, your mileage will go down by 1%. Most cars are running with 5 to 10 psi lower than the requirement, means you are driving your car with 5% extra cost. So if your monthly petrol expenses is at RM500 per month, you could save RM25 by checking your tyres pressure regularly, at least once a month. Timing is also important. Make sure to check the pressure when the tyres are cold. The best is in early morning at the nearest petrol station since long driving will increase tyre’s temperature as well as the air pressure and gives a false reading.
Avoid unnecessary weight
The more work you car has to do, the more petrol its need to generate more energy. For every 45kg additional weight, fuel efficiency can drop to 1 to 2 percent. Check your car’s booth and clear the unnecessary weight.
Do not over start-up
Engine start-up is important to ensure the engine work smoothly when we move the car. But you don’t need few minutes for this. 30 to 45 seconds is good enough to warming the engine. Pumping the accelerator pedal repeatedly during the warming up is totally not necessary and wasting fuel.
Drive efficiently
Speeding, accelerating and hard braking could cost you 30% extra from your pocket. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, and objects that are stopped tend to stay stopped. Energy requires to overcome this and of course fast result requires more energy. If you accelerate to speed then have to brake right away, you are wasting you fuel. Thus accelerate moderately without over-revving by using the right gear. A good rule is to stay under 3,000 revs. Slow down and brake naturally to maximize the car’s momentum. Most cars are running at average 90km/h. Every additional speed of 10km/h will decrease your fuel efficiency by 6%. Think twice before accelerate. Do you really need high-speed?
Fuel tank means more weightve efficiently
More weight means more energy. Your car will be more efficient if it’s running with less fuel. Thus fill up 1/2 or 3/4 full to make you car more efficient.
Full up when its cold
Fill up fuel during cold temperatures, the best in the early morning. Similar to water, fuel will evaporate in hot temperature that will lower its density. Fuel pumps measure fuel volume rather than its density. Therefore fill up during high density is the best.
There are lots more tips you could find on the net, but I think above are tips that could give you the most saving if you keep practicing it. Change you driving method and take care of your car are much easier than keep complaining to the govt on fuel price increase.
